Levan ------------------ it was built between 1888 and 1895, it has the style of a loire castle. it is a nice house and the library is beautiful, i wished i had such a room to put my castle books in ;( but in my opinion it is a mansion and not a castle. so i think you can move it to the mansions and manors forum. you can see it at http://www.biltmore.com/ , to judge for yourself JenniDCW1 I have have visited Biltmore many times over the years. It is a very interesting house. Here is my question, how to they account for the 250 rooms? I have complete floorplans of the house and including every room except closets, staris wells, and narrow hallways I come up with only 91 rooms. Does anyone have any idea how they are comming up with 250? KathyD This is tricky, my husband and I asked this question while visiting the house about a year ago, our question was quickly dismissed and the topic changed. We have long since been interested in Biltmore. About Five or so years ago we accquired floorplans and line drawn elevations of the house from a yard sale. After revewing the plans we were shoked. We could only acount for (by our count) 94 rooms. Clearly biltmore house does not contain 255 or so rooms as they claim. This topic has been asked on other forums in the past. Maybe somone else can shed light on this topic? Levan Maybe they're counting broom cupboards, dressing rooms and, dare I say it, the 'smallest' rooms too - as individual cubicles, of course! Gordon Biltmore? Where is it in which country? Is it a castle, or did it develop from one?
If it's a mansion with no castle elements then it should be in the appropriate forum. Let me know and I can transfer it.

Visit; Gordon's Scottish Castles Resource Page ipflo the Biltmore estate is in asheville, northern carolina, USA. it is one of the most visited houses of america. Barkton Ive only been to Biltmore once but I took the behind the seens tour. There are about 5 floors of living and working space. There are many servants bedrooms. Im sure they are counting the bathrooms. There are many rooms they don't show on tours. KathyD I think I may have this solved. I have found out that the offical tally for the first floor is is 26 rooms, they are counting EVERYTHING except the area/hall around the winter garden room. ALL other areas are counted including stair halls and narrow service halls to the side and back of the banquet hall. All closets that are greater than 50 sq. ft. are counted as well. All of the 43 bathrooms are also counted even a tiny 1/2 bath on the main floor near the portico enterence. I also learned that there is a large un-windowed attic above the fourth floor service quarters that is divived into many areas. Upon learning all of this now my count will take me to 241. which is much much closer, there are still propably areas that are not even shown on the floorplans I have, that would complete this puzzle. I am not sure if I agree with them on their counting though. My home is listed as a 10 room house but to go by the same formula biltmore uses my house would contain 23 rooms. I guess nothing is as it really seems. Still it is a lovley home. I would however consider Biltmore a castle, condsidering it's size and all. It is very similar to castles built in France.
